I really enjoyed this book. It is my 2nd book by Polly Evans and I still like her. Having been to China, I was looking forward to this book. This book makes me want to go back to China, this time just to wander like she did. Of course, I'd want to learn Chinese (at least a little) before hand.

This is a wishlist book (travelog + foodie book... my two favorite genres) so I couldn't type fast enough to sign up for the box when I spotted this title. So happy to get it. Thank you so much Goaliegirl.
I couldn't quite believe this. I was looking for this book for ages and couldn't find it. I wanted to bring this to a BCer in Bordeaux convention and I looked through all my boxes of books at least twice, and started to believe that I brought it to read in Hong Kong and had left it there. Then lo and behold, last week I was picking books to read for the travelog book box, and right in one of the boxes of travel books and there it was!! And it wasn't even stored in the wrong place or being hidden by another book. (I store my books in beer boxes by category. They are the perfect size for books , not as tall as filing boxes and come with two handles on the side. Key West Ale holds travelogs, DFH 60 Minutes for nonfiction, Two Hearted Ale for fiction... )
Anyway, it seems obvious the book does not wish to go to France, and very much prefer to be back in Goalie's box where it started out. So be it.
Evans caught China at the time of change: huddling to the modern life and capitalism. Her experience is unique in her time, different from what travelers experience ten year before or after. Though of course, if you go to the more remote area, things may be more untouched.
Reading her book reminds me of my travel to Beijing and the beautiful Zuchou and the villages nearby.
Also interesting to read about her experience with gua sha. I would beg my husband to perform that treatment when I have a cold! Not that he is particularly good at it but there's no doctor here to go to for that. Indeed my back is quite horrid to look at afterwards. In fact, in the U.S. there was a case when a parent was arrested on suspicion of child abuse until they were able to verify that it was a, helpful or not, at least harmless cold remedy...

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Restarting the stalled food bookbox.
taking out of the food book box-this looks like a fun read.

I chose to read this book this month for 2 reasons. 1) It met Plum-Crazy's what to read for December theme of an advent calendar, Day 13 said a book taken from a book box. 2) I am taking part in mysteriousmummy's 12 Days of Christmas exchange and I'm assigned 6 geese a laying. The EGG fits that theme.
However, I quit this book on page 67. It is not a genre that I would normally choose to read and I'm not enjoying it, just forcing myself to read. I'm still going to pass it along in my 12 Days of Christmas exchange and hope that the next reader will enjoy it.
