"Nothing links person to person like the frequent passage from hand to hand of a good book."
I loved this beautiful story of people surviving and help others survive during wartime. This is a story that really needed to be told, and Ackerman did such a wonderful job.
It was chosen as the book for the "One Book One San Diego" selection for 2009 (I think I got the year right).

I released this book to follow a "ring" of readers at Qualcomm. Enjoy!
If you aren't familiar with Bookcrossing, take a few minutes to check out this very cool site. Bookcrossers LOVE books, and more than anything, they love to read books and then set them free for other people to find and enjoy. I would love it if you would leave a journal entry -- you can say where you found the book or how you liked it when you read it. Then, when you are ready, pass it along for someone else to enjoy! Thanks and happy reading!

This is a non-fiction account of one family’s WWII experiences in Warsaw, Poland. The family was the owner/operators of the Warsaw zoo prior to the war, and the book outlines how they used their position and knowledge to provide refuge to Jewish friends and community members as well as their activities in the Polish Underground.
Every time I read something on WWII I gain new perspective and new information. I’m reminded over and over again about human resilience and resistance in the face of evil. In this book, gaining a Polish perspective on the German occupation of their city was new to me. This story doesn’t focus on the concentration camps although the annihilation of Jews and the destruction from the Warsaw Jewish Ghetto are sobering truths that hold a place in this book.
Like many stories set during WWII, a disturbing amount of evil, and an uplifting amount of good.
