Few in the prosperous fenland town of Boston are surprised when, following the death of her husband, Isabelle Crosse is challenged as his heir by his bastard son. But when the twenty-two-year-old Isabelle insists on what is rightfully hers and moreover succeeds in being recognised as a guildmaster, the town is set alight with excitement. Her husband's trading partner, the cynical and intelligent William Curteys, is dismayed and he is further appalled when Isabelle, whose implacable determination is in danger of alienating many of her allies, announces she intends to join him on a trading expedition to the Baltic.
The vast wastes of the Baltic landscapes and the exotic mystery of its cities both thrill and terrify Isabelle, who finds herself increasingly estranged from Curteys and drawn to a new acquaintance, the glamourous and enigmatic Albrecht von Fellin. Leader of an order of the crusading Teutonic Knights, vonFellin is pledged, by whatever means necessary, to subdue the strange, often barbaric domains of the Baltic, the Land of Darkness. A land in which, travelling in search of ever-more-wonderful trading goods, Isabelle now finds herself...

Can't remember where I picked this book up, I've had it for a while on my TBR shelf. It's a pretty interesting historical romance, the characters are well-drawn and believable and I found it hard to put down. Wish there was a sequel! In "good" condition, some creasing of the cover and spine.
