Strange writing style and flat characters. I will not be finishing this book.

The first chapter on this book was very hard to follow, with a narrator describing the scene to what you believe is you, the reader, and it is really the narrator talking to a secondary character in the novel. Once the story starts to reveal itself in the following chapters the many voices come to life and define the characters in the story. The cholera epidemic, a doctor studying medicine, and a dress lodger all take center stage and as the story builds on itself and becomes clear that the first impression many of the characters revealed were facades and their true character starts to show.
Even though this was not a light read, I did enjoyed the complex storyline and characters.

Arrived in the mail yesterday. Thanks Aberpeter!
This book is set in Sunderland, England in 1831 during the cholera epidemic. This book covers many issues...poverty, prostitution, superstitions, the differences between the rich and poor, body snatching for medical research, etc. There are many unusual and sad characters and their unfortunate circumstances throughout the book. An interesting book of historical fiction.

It’s funny how your reading tastes change over the years. I registered this book a long time ago, tried to read it and decided to let it travel as it wasn’t my style. So many years later and it’s right up my alley. Thank you for sending it back to me so I can try again!!
