A fascinating novel of firemen who are paid to set books ablaze. In that world books are for burning, along with the houses in which they are hidden.

451 degrees Fahrenheit is the temperature at which books burn...

This edition is an unabridged audiobook on 6 CDs read by the author.

I don't read much science fiction, but this book is great even if you're not usually a big scifi fan. For one thing, it makes you appreciate even more than you are aware of anyway as an avid book reader, how valuable books are and how much would be missing without them. Without revealing too much, I'd just like to say I was impressed by the dedication of some people for keeping the books alive...

I read the book in print and found it fascinating, so much so that I bought this audio book for my husband to listen to in the car. Now he is done with it and it can move on. I heard bits and pieces of the audio book as well while riding with my husband in the car. I like the fact that it's read by the author himself.

I'm sending this to my bookcrossing birthday buddy, who is wishing for (unabridged) audio books!

Received this from my 2009 BookCrossing Birthday Buddy. Thank you, I love earreading audio books!

This is one of those classics I only got to read a few years ago. I enjoyed the concepts behind it (I love dystopian societies) and the journey the main character goes through.

I look forward to earreading this version and sharing my thoughts!

It's really great to earread this book, read by the author. Even though he didn't have the most clear voice at times, it gave me an extra level of insight to hear how the author read certain passages (because I'd already read a copy of this book before and wasn't listening for the story alone). But my favorite part was disc 6, with all the bonus stuff, including the author interview.

Interviewer: What do you want to say to people who purchased the new edition?
Author: Make love to me. Take my book to bed. Read it and think about it later, but don't think about it while you're reading it.

I should have guessed Ray Bradbury would be a hoot! LOL!

This is an excellent book about the importance of literature... and the importance of free thought. Set in a society where firemen burn books (instead of saving things from burning) and there are officers whose jobs are to make sure everyone conforms, one man realizes that there's more out there. This book really makes you think.

Guy Montag was a fireman whose job it was to start fires...
The system was simple. Everyone understood it. Books were for burning... along with the houses in which they were hidden. Guy Montag enjoyed his job. he had been a fireman for ten years, and he had never questioned the pleasure of the midnight runs nor the joy of watching pages consumed by flames... never questioned anything until he met a seventeen-year-old girl who told him of a past when people were not afraid. Then he met a professor who told him of a future in which people could think... and Guy Montag suddenly realized what he had to do!

Apparently this one has had a journey in my bookbox, although it's coming to me via someone else's. :') I'm not really a sci-fi reader either, but I realized that when I read the description of this on the back cover, I've never really known what this story was about. Burning books! Wow. I think I better read it!

Okay, I found this on my bookshelf the other day -- forgot that I had a copy. I read this story for book club a couple years ago, and ironically, I listened to an audio version via Hoopla, though the reader was Tim Robbins, not Ray Bradbury. Below is my review for that version:

2/5/21 -- Guy Montag is a fireman. However, he doesn't put out fires. He, along with all the other firefighters, ignite fires in order to destroy all evidence of printed books, as well as the houses they are found in. But when a couple of specific incidents occur, he begins to question what he's never questioned before.

I managed to make it through school without having to read this book and I've never had a strong desire to, mostly because it was one of those required reading books which had to be analyzed for symbolism, etc. I've never been good at catching all the symbolism in books. I tend to read books more for their entertainment value and to expand my knowledge, though I don't necessarily want to have to work at discovering that knowledge. Lay it out there for me and I'm good.

I have mixed feelings about this one. I read it on audio, and despite the book being read by the wonderful Tim Robbins, I do think I would've gotten more out of this had I read it in print. Lots has been said about this book still being very relevant and spot-on for today's world. That is true. I enjoyed the writing for the most part -- the dialogue sounded quite contemporary, and it's hard to believe this was originally published in 1953. But I guess I was frustrated by all the unanswered questions. Mostly, I wanted some more background as to how the world got to the point of where it was in this story, and there wasn't a lot of that. The ending left me kind of unsatisfied as well, although I suppose a lot of dystopian fiction is like that. Regardless, it is a good discussion book, and though I don't really regret not having to analyze it in school, it will be a good one to discuss at my upcoming book club.
