This is the second time that I read this book (on my bookshelf, you can find my comments at BCID: 918-4857961). The first time that I read it was a little over two years ago. I picked it up recently, quite by accident and I realized by the second page that I had read this book before. I did recall enjoying it, so I continued to read this new copy. I am glad that I did. I got a somewhat different perspective of the story from the first time and I thoroughly enjoyed this second reading.
Do you know anything about the Spanish Civil War?

That war is the main drive for this book. It is truly a thriller. It is set in the UK and in Spain before, during and after the civil war. The main characters are three classmates from a British public school (Rookwood College, though I am sure that is a fake name - correct me if I am wrong, please). Sandy is the son of a bishop but he is totally turned off by any authoritative people including his father. He shows up at Rookwood after being kicked out of another public school. Harry is the one who is the stable influence of the three. He does not trust Sandy, but can get along with him. The third character is Bernie who is the son of a grocer in the Isle of Dogs in London (not at all as posh a location in those days as it has become in recent years). Bernie gets into Rookwood via a scholarship. He and Sandy detest each other.

As luck would have it, all three get tied up in the horrors of the Spanish Civil War and the World War which followed it.

This was a book that I had a difficult time putting down. I often read it late into the night.

You never exactly know who your friends (or enemies) are.

This is definitely a page-turner.
