Another in the choose-your-own-path series, this one's set in South America, and includes options that lead to confrontations with very modern officials - or with Mayan warriors from centuries past... [The book also has an online tie-in, with an alternate ending.]

The storylines here include trips to the past, modern-day political intrigue, ecological disasters, and even space flight; quite a mix, but then the Mayan civilization has been credited with all manner of knowledge and powers!

The choices here were sometimes a bit random, with no way to deduce the best alternative, but that keeps the reader guessing. And some of the twists were nicely dramatic, even scary. I even tried the online alternative, which was entertaining though the book works as well without it. Another nice entry in the choose-your-own series.

Later: while I was reading the book I noted lots of detail about the locations - Uxmal, Kabah, Cozumel, Chichen Itza - and unexpected items such as cenotes (very deep wells/caves), and the mysterious appearance of red hand-prints in some of the ruins. Well, I was reading Incidents of Travel in the Yucatan recently, and not only did it include visits to all the places mentioned in Mystery of the Maya, but it described those red hand-prints, and trips into deep (and scary) cenotes as well! While the author of the choose-your-own book could have picked up that information from other sources, I couldn't help wondering if he'd read Incidents in the Yucatan... It did add to my enjoyment of both books.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:

I'd hoped to leave this book in the "Inca Trail" geocache, but when I got to the location I couldn't find it (a not-uncommon result; I often have to try two or three times before I stumble across the right spot!). Rather than wait for another try, I went looking for It's No Hoover, which I'd tried and failed to find some time back, and lo! I was able to find it this time, proving my try-try-again theory {grin}. The location's near a stream and a dam, so I thought it fit in with some of the water-based subplots of the book. Hope the finder enjoys the cache and the book! [Note: the picture is from within 40 feet or so of the cache, but won't be much help in finding it. The clues on the geocaching page were helpful!]

Released as part of Jare's Chills and Spills 2009 Challenge. The category for April includes Gaia's revenge (nature fighting back); several of the sub-plots here deal with ecological disasters, and ongoing concerns about water...

I picked up this book in a geocache in Mine Falls park. I read Choose Your Own Adventurers rabidly as a kid. I'll enjoy this one to bring back the memories before passing it along.
