'Patrick Scully is special. At least, he was as a child - talented at school and on the football field. In awe of his father, all he ever wanted was to follow him into the guards. But now his father is dead, school's over and Scully is stuck in a dead-end job in Dublin. Unable to articulate his bitterness and mounting rage, the only way to turn is in...'

This was a great book and I was really surprised by it considering how different it is from O'Hanlon's other work. It was a real pleasure to read and although shocking in parts, very enjoyable. The ending was great too. All in all a great addition to the 1001 list.

When I finish this it will be going out as a Bookray. Participants so far;

I wrote a journal entry for this book a few days ago but I was having computer problems. It looks like it got totally lost along the way so I'll try to reconstruct it.
It was a very good book. I wasn't expecting this at all from it, read: I would have never thought that Dougal from Father Ted would have such a dark book in him! It's gritty and very confronting but the atmosphere comes across as very real. It's well written. going to the very funny to the very tragic. Thanks Danielle23, I would have never have known the existence of that book if you hadn't put together this bookring. Hurray for bookrings.

So it's now on its way to the US - I'm having one of those mad start of the week so far but the book is now all packed up and in my bag, so I should be mailing it to easterngirl71 by Friday at the latest, if all goes according to plan.

Want to let everyone know that it will take me a bit to get to this book. I hope you all understand. I had to go to my hometown not long ago and was gone for 5 weeks taking care of my dad who had heart surgery. When I got back I had a pile of bookring/ray books to read and they keep trickling in. I am doing my best to read as fast as I can but I still have 8 books to read before I can read this one. I appreciate your patience and understanding with me at this difficult time. Thanks for including me!

I almost gave up on this book. . .just couldn't get into it at first. While this wasn't my one of my top reads for this year; I am glad that I finished. Just when it starts to be funny though, it turns dark. I had absolutely no idea things would turn out as they did. Thank you for sharing. I'll have it moving as soon as I hear from next in line.
