I really like this book! I picked it up because I wanted something quick, and it's been lurking around on Mt TBR for absolutely ages. I'm only halfway through at the moment, but definitely think it's a deserving entry on the 1001 list.

Will be sent off as a bookray:
cat207 - Australia (Intl)
gwendy - USA (Intl)
lunacia - Norway (EU)
Danielle23 - UK (UK)

I loved this book. I loved the writing with its old-fashioned language scattered with idioms that somehow stand up to time. I loved the lazy feeling of summer that really put me in the mood for the season to come. Thanks for sharing your book!

Send along to Danielle23 in the UK via slow boat (previous person asked to be skipped)

I really enjoyed this book. I found it very easy to read and loved the ending, even though it was a little extreme and I don't quite see how that was 'thinking of the children'.

All in all a great read and deserved of its status on the 1001 list.

Now sending this off as another Bookray to try and keep it moving.

Just received this book, it looks really interesting, especially the roman numerals as the chapter numbers, I'll start reading as soon as I can!

Journal Entry 10 by JonniC from Birmingham, West Midlands United Kingdom on Thursday, July 9, 2009
I have just finished the book, I thought it was okay, but it really wasn't my kind of book, but I'm happy that I have read it now, considering it has stopped me from buying the book, as I've been thinking about whether to or not, so I thank you! I believe the next person who happens to be Fluffy-owl will like it a lot more, I shall send soon, but I am unsure when exactly!

Am curious, reading above comments, as to whether I will like this! Got back from a camping trip to find five BC books waiting for me, lovely! Will try to read this one soon.

Journal Entry 13 by Fluffy-Owl from Chichester, West Sussex United Kingdom on Sunday, August 9, 2009
Not great, but I can see why it got an entry in the 1001 Books as it was before its time, in a way. I felt annoyance with most of the characters and am glad it was quite short - couldn't have read much more before growing tired with everyone in it.

Posting off tomorrow.

Arrived safe and sound, will get too as soon as I get through the book I'm reading and the ray thats waiting!

28 Aug 09 - What a funny little book. I found the cover quite creepy so had it face down when not reading it, however I did love the old book smell it had (I'm weird!!) The story line was interesting and I thought I knew where it was going, but actually had no idea at all, what an unexpected ending. I like the fact that they translated the french as you went along. French was never my strong point and I have come across a couple of books recently that put words or sentences in the language which make no sense whatsoever - very frustrating! Thanks for including me.

I can see why this book was so shocking when it was written in the nineteenth century. While I understand that people have a right to think about themselves and their own needs/desires, I do think that it is also important to show respect to the people in your life. There were times when the main character became too self-centered. In my opinion her husband did deserve to be treated better.

Journal Entry 24 by snarkhunting from Quincy, Massachusetts USA on Tuesday, January 26, 2010
Just checking in. I've had to take this one very slowly and carefully because the glue in the binding is crumbling. I'm not sure that adding a few drops of glue would help, so I'm not going to risk damaging it further by trying to repair it. I'm about three-quarters of the way through the book and should finish with it in another sitting. I sent a PM to the next participant a few days ago and am still waiting for shipping information.

That said, I'm enjoying this story a lot more than I expected I would. I'm sorry to have to keep the book longer than I should, but I hope to get it moving along quickly. Thanks for understanding.

Journal Entry 25 by snarkhunting from Quincy, Massachusetts USA on Tuesday, February 2, 2010
I think I'm going to have to finish this one online. Holding the book open even enough to read is breaking the binding, and I'm just not comfortable with that when there are other people waiting to read it. I'm hoping another participant might know the best way to fix the binding. I'm still a little shy about trying glue. Sorry about that.

I'll keep my eyes open for a second copy to see if perhaps we can replace this one. Sometimes we get classics in at the library, and they're only a dime to purchase.

I should be sending this out sometime tomorrow afternoon. Be safe, and good luck, little broken book!

Journal Entry 30 by Sherlockfan at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Wednesday, June 16, 2010
When I came to review what I had written about this book before despatching it I found that two entries had disappeared from the JEs for this book, both the first one I wrote when I recorded the arrival of the book and then the JE I'd written after I'd read it. No sign of either but luckily I had copied my JE into the Word file where I keep a record each year of what I'd read so I can repost this. If there is some sort of shuffle up as the new site gets sorted then it may seem as if I've written twice. Now you know why.

May 30/31 My JE.
Not quite sure what to say about the book. Others have commented on not wanting to open it wide in case that damages the spine and I agree. It is worth treating it gently though as it is an interesting tale. Several times I found myself in deep sympathy with some of the ideas that Mrs Pontellier expressed. She was certainly ahead of her time, or perhaps it was Kate Chopin. No wonder its release created a stir. Mr Pontellier was certainly a man of his time, not really loveable at all. It is a book that I'd like to read within a book club and hear the discussions about all aspects.

I sent a private message to Davis59 asking for her address on 1 June but have not heard. I'll send her a reminder today but I'm going away for a couple of weeks tomorrow so it could be a while before I can post this if my prompt doesn't result in a response.

LATER - 12 July
Still no response to my two pms to Davis59. I've sent another one this morning but in 5 days I leave for 6 weeks overseas so unless I hear from her before I leave there is not a lot I can do. Boo Hoo!

Journal Entry 31 by Sherlockfan at Upper Hutt, Wellington Province New Zealand on Monday, July 12, 2010
I've now heard from Davis59 and the book will be in the mail tomorrow. Not the first time this has happened to me.
