(blurb) When an exotic stranger, Vianne Roche, arrives in the French village of Lansquenet & opens a chocolate boutique directly opposite the church, Father Reynaud identifies her as a serious danger to his flock - especially as it is the beginning of Lent, the traditional season of self-denial. War is declared as the priest denonces the newcomer's wares as the ultimate sin.

Suddenly Vianne's shop-cum-cafe means there is somewhere for secrets to be whispered, grievances to be aired & dreams to be tested.
But Vianne's plans for an Easter Chocolate Festival divide the whole community in a conflict that escalates into a "Church not Chocolate" battle.

The blurb asks "is this the best book ever written?", so I had high expectations for it. I'm so glad I didn't watch the film before I read the book -I loved it, & especially the suggestion of magic that runs throughout.

Journal Entry 3 by wingAnonymousFinderwing on Friday, August 28, 2009
As a book lover imagine my delight when, whilst eating my lunch by the canal in Brighouse, I caught sight of a free book sitting on the bench nearby. I picked it up and although it was not the type of book I would usually read I thought that 'reading and releasing a book into the wild' was such a brilliant idea that I just had to take it home! I read the book and enjoyed it. I will be releasing the book somewhere in Pickering this weekend and hope it finds a new reader soon.
