On my March vacations, I usually end up buying a few books off my Wish List in order to get them circulating. This is one of those, the kind you hold reverently in your hands and wish you could start reading right away. It had good reviews, and I look forward to reading it. Comments later!
Well, it took eleven months for me to finally get to this one, but it was worth it! Actually it was chosen by my Book Group. Only one person found it "too slow", but she also admitted that she has trouble getting inside the minds of men, and there is a lot of reflection here by the main character Trond. It is a complex but very beautiful book, as told by an aging man who after the death of his wife moves into a cabin in the middle of nowhere in Norway, practically on the border with Sweden... except that the spot has been deliberately chosen, and all the reminiscences go back to various moments of time in the past connected with this place and a series of other characters all intertwined. The last line of the book, which I will not reveal here because that would be a big spoiler, makes you want to rethink it all. I do think it true that, as we grow older, we more readily let go of things that we just don't want interfering with our minds anymore, Trond's story is mostly about the complicated relationship with his father, but also with a family close by that lived a real tragedy while courting many others...friendships that couldn't be, times that were dangerous, human emotions hidden and revealed, coming of age, nature's beauty always present in spite of the follies of men... and of course, stealing horses, which shows up several times in the novel, just layer upon layer of meanings. I think the book settles into your unconscious and keeps floating up more as a feeling than as a story. I really liked this one a lot.

This arrived in yesterday's mail and it was a welcome sight! THANK YOU!
Everyone here (myself and Dad) are sick as dogs. He's just back from hospital, recovering from pneumonia, and I caught some random bug while I was there visiting him.
Ick.
So while I am in bed, I'll be reading. :)

While the writing and the setting were beautiful, the story didn't do anything for me.
