'Mesmerically gripping' - Sainsbury's Magazine 'The enormous spirit of the characters and overriding sense of fun gives this book warmth and appeal' - Waterstone's Books Quarterly 'Written with insight, intelligence and style, a highly engaging and entertaining read with a complex plot and a cast of utterly believable characters' - Sydney Morning Herald 'A good-humoured saga' - Sun Herald

I enjoyed the story & the period setting, but not the very poor writing. This sentence is from early on in the book:
"A marble be-numbered head had been a strange thing for a little girl to play with, but strangeness never alarmed people in the theatre, who were used to a thousand strangenesses: did they not live nightly with wax apples, and bowls of unreal blood, and skulls often, and live doves, and dead deer, and books with no pages in them, all sitting in the property corner?"
Whole sentences in the book don't make sense & are poorly punctuated - it just put me off the whole thing.
