This is a masterpiece of black comedy set in present-day and late 19th-century Vienna. Through the link between the two periods employs the rather hackneyed device of a long-lost diary, the interwoven stories are sufficiently bewitching for this not to matter. The present-day narrative focuses on the unlikely relationship between Josef Horvath, a prematurely middle-aged singing teacher, haunted by hypochondria and the memory of his recently deceased mother, and Magnolia Brown, product of an ecstatic union beneath a tree in New York's Central Park between her Austrian-born mother and a black saxophonist in the carefree 1960s. Magnolia has come to Vienna to improve her singing technique, in preparation for playing the part of Freud's daughter in a Broadway musical.
