Wide Sargasso Sea (Movie Tie-In Edition)
8 journalers for this copy...
This is Jean Rhys' version of Antoinette Cosway's story. Antoinette is the woman in the attic in "Jane Eyre", Mr. Rochester's first wife. This copy has a still from the 1993 film version on the cover; I haven't seen the movie - if you have, please tell us in your journal entry how closely it followed the book!

Safely received today. I will try and get through this asap. Thanks very much for sharing Labmomnm
I didn't enjoy this one I'm afraid - it didn't answer anything for me about why Antoinette was mad and why Rochester treated her so badly.
PMing Vekiki for her address today.

A much darker story than i expected from the blurb, and an enjoyable read once i got into it. I agree that it still left questions unanswered, but was never the less an interesting story.

I dropped in to 'The Camel and Artichoke' this afternoon to drop off a couple of books that have been traveling with me, and to see what I could find to keep me going. This is one of the books that I decided to pick up! I haven't seen the movie (though I know of it), and i have to say I'm not even very fond of Jane Eyre (!!), however I've always been intrigued by the idea of the mad Mrs rochester, so I look forward to reading it as I travel back to Australia during the next week.
I enjoyed this book - particularly the fact that it was written from both Antoinette and Mr Rochester's point of view. I liked the style of writing, which seemed to suit the lush tropical environment it was written in. To be honest, I've never liked Jane Eyre (the book, nor the character) so I have no investment in Mr Rochester being tormented or terribly romantic, but it was interesting to have this additional facet to the original story. I think I feel more sympathy for him as a result of reading this, although I have *far* more sympathy for the Mad Mrs Rochester, who is most ill-used by almost all the men in her life, and Charlotte Bronte - who uses her more as a circumstance than a real character.
This has been picked up by tantan from the VBB Oz (vbboz.blogspot.com) so I'll pack it up now and hopefully have it in the post tomorrow!

And in the post today.
Received - many thanks KLL!
I'm really looking forward to reading this book, but I must admit to being very put off by the cover. I try not to judge a book by its cover, but if I were browsing a bookstore this is about the last thing I'd pick up. That said, the back cover blurb still makes me want to read it, and I've heard lots of good things about this book.

I finished this last night, and I'm really not sure what I think of it. It probably hasn't helped that I've read this very sporadically, and often only a page or two at a time. I think it deserved more dedicated attention. I had a lot of sympathy for Antoinette, and a lot of dislike for Mr Rochester. Too many unanswered questions for me, but the manner of writing did suit the story the way it was told.
I'll offer this up on the Oz VBB.

Claimed from the Oz VBB by luckaye. Enjoy and happy travels!
Arrived yesterday and I have already started it :) Quite like it so far. I haven't read 'Jane Eyre' yet so I have no preconceptions of Mr Rochester or his mad wife :)
Finished the book feeling a bit unsatisfied - a few unanswered questions. Anyway, will read 'Jane Eyre' next.

Thanks jennymidget for granting another wish of those novels I want to read as part of my month for the OZVBB. I havent read Jane Eyre and I do have a copy on my shelf and from the previous journal entries I am not so sure which of these two novels I should read first!
