A nice find from the book exchange shelf in the main library of Tampere. Taken to be registered for BC release purposes.

Synopsis from Amazon.com:

"The three sisters haven't been together for six years when they all gather at Calder Lodge in the wake of the stepmother's death. They quickly settle into the old sibling patterns: Vanessa, the eldest, clucks round like a mother hen; rebel Jamie, just back from America, is the outspoken one whose straight-talking isn't always to her sisters' taste; and Phil, the youngest, in the shadow of the other two, is willing to follow where they lead. But the familiar roles are deceptive. Vanessa's apparently happy marriage conceals domestic abuse; Jamie's successful career has ended in ruin and a broken heart; in fact it is Phil, always the low achiever, who has managed to make the most of her life. These secrets become apparent only after several months and the resolution of the various problems takes place against the breathtaking beauty of the Scottish Highlands."

So this was my first reading experience with Raife and I was not disapppointed. Most of all I liked the subtle Scottish feel of the story, especially Calder seemed to have lovely surroundings. Raife is able to bring much emotions into the dialogue and her characters here are really vivid with their sorrows and joys. This not just one of those romantic stories but instead touches different chrisis and challenges of the character's lives and presents their raw feelings while going through them. The sisterly bond was a theme I enjoyed reading about, it brought me to again feel the small sorrow I sometimes feel of having no sisters myself.

It is nice to know that I have one more book from Raife waiting on my shelf. This book will now travel to kasenka, who also enjoys Raife's books.

I liked this book very much, although I would have liked to know more about Phil. There was a lot about Jamie and Vanessa but not about the youngest sister.

I'll send this book to someone as part of the It's a Total Surprise RABCK Exchange.

Happy reading!

Thanks so much for the surprises! The chocolate has already been eaten, very yummy, and the stickers are always handy. The book seems very interesting, I like female fiction and are looking forward to reading this one. All the best!

Although this book doesn´t have an amazing story - in fact, I had a feeling of deja vu - it was a pleasant read. It is easy to feel some connection with the sisters and their differences. I have a sister, we are both quite different, and sometimes we get on each others nerves; but that doesn´t mean that we can´t have special moments together.
Thanks for sharing!
