From Amazon.com:
Claireece Precious Jones endures unimaginable hardships in her young life. Abused by her mother, raped by her father, she grows up poor, angry, illiterate, fat, unloved and generally unnoticed. So what better way to learn about her than through her own, halting dialect. That is the device deployed in the first novel by poet and singer Sapphire. "Sometimes I wish I was not alive," Precious says. "But I don't know how to die. Ain' no plug to pull out. 'N no matter how bad I feel my heart don't stop beating and my eyes open in the morning." An intense story of adversity and the mechanisms to cope with it.

I should have heeded the warning of individuals who saw the film adaptation of Sapphire's book at Sundance but I had to see for myself what everyone was talking about and all I can say is "Wow". Sapphire's look at the life of Precious is at once devastating and heartwarming. At one moment you're angry and disappointed that no one has helped this girl and you can't help but feel sorry for her but in the next instant, you're cheering for her and crying with joy at her strength to move on. It's not an easy read, Sapphire writes most of the book from Precious' perspective including her poor spelling, but there's a power in the language and a feeling of intimacy, a feeling that you're sharing in Percious' deepest and darkest thoughts.
It's not an easy story to read but one that is riveting and which will have you re-evaluating your own life. A must read.

Agree - never an easy read - often the language requires extra time, and care. And Precious's situation is always hard to think about. But we do feel for her - and admire her coping and her capacity for hope.
