relatively early Toibin, not quite up to 'Story of the Night' or 'The Black Water Lightship' but it has the typically crafted writing, beautifully, weird mein character and the atmosphere one expects from him. Much of it takes place in Barcelona and the Spanish Pyrenees and there is a whiff of that fabulous story from 'Mothers and Sons' in those mountain moments.
