Found it while rummaging around in Semiotic Ghost's bedroom, which is frankly enough exposure for anyone, so I'll see how I like being hardboiled and I'll get back to you!

Ok, read it now, and it certainly has been boiled pretty hard!--it's a bit like a helping of nursery cabbage that's been cooked so long all the goodness and flavour has leeched out. A few chewy bits of stem left in imaginative similie, and refreshing to see a 'hard' crime novel populated by drug-crazed laudanum fiends rather than the more usual heroine and crack, but I think I'll still be taking my pan off the hob for future reading.
