I went to one of my favorite UBS in the area and got in a discussion with the young woman staffing the store. There was a huge stack of books on the floor, which turned out to be duplicates or discards (cover bent, etc.) She let me pick some to have as freebies for BookCrossing. Now, isn't that nice? This book was one of the picks.

This is a cult favorite in the genre of ummm...paranormal, vampire chick lit? Anyhow, I thought I'd give it a try, since I have heard from several people that Anita Blake is kick-ass (insert adjective of choice). I must admit I kind of liked the alternative St Louis (as I lived in our St Louis) for many years. The set up and such reminded me of the Jim Butcher novels, but with a female vampire-hunter, instead of a guy-wizard-P.I. (Prime line early on is "I don't date vampires. I kill them.") The back story and introduction of characters was a little choppy for me, but I was able to follow it. Sometimes I did feel like I needed a scorecard to keep track of who was who. I imagine some of these characters are bound to turn up in later books.

All in all, it's an interesting introduction to a series. Not sure if I'll pick up more of these, but since this one fell into my hands, it was worth the read.

From the Publisher

Published over ten years ago by Ace, Guilty Pleasures marked the debut of a series that was destined to grow from cult favorite to a major New York Times bestseller. Now, for long-time Anita Blake junkies and newfound fans, Guilty Pleasures makes its trade paperback debut. Readers will learn how Anita Blake started raising the dead-and killing the undead. And how she met Jean Claude, the master vampire destined to become not only her biggest nemesis, but her greatest lover...
