On the "1001 Books . . . " list.

Amazon Description:
"Part detective novel, part psychological thriller, Surfacing is the story of a talented woman artist who goes in search of her missing father on a remote island in northern Quebec. Setting out with her lover and another young couple, she soon finds herself captivated by the isolated setting, where a marriage begins to fall apart, violence and death lurk just beneath the surface, and sex becomes a catalyst for conflict and dangerous choices. Surfacing is a work permeated with an aura of suspense, complex with layered meanings, and written in brilliant, diamond-sharp prose. Here is a rich mine of ideas from an extraordinary writer about contemporary life and nature, families and marriage, and about women fragmented...and becoming whole."

Hmm . . . this went off in totally unexpected directions. Great prose, but somehow didn't really grab me. Now off on a trip as promised.

It took me a little while to read this, because Mountain TBR is enormous, but I finally did, and I enjoyed it :) Thanks again!

I will be passing this on to my friend Lotte, who will then probably pass it on to her sisters. It will probably come back to me afterwards, so I can send it back into the big wide world :)

Received - thank you. I've enjoyed a lot of Atwood's books in the past, so am really looking forward to trying this one.

I've read a lot of Atwood's books over the years, but this is the first one I've found to be completely indecipherable. That's not to say I couldn't read it, as Atwood's language, as ever, is great. But I just couldn't access the story or the characters. These must be some of the most obnoxious people I have read - David is awful, essentially a bully, while his wife, Anna, seems to pander to his every whim - I just wanted to shake her. And Joe was a non-entity to me - maybe in the same way he was to the narrator.

But it was her that was so hard to fathom. You glean bits about her life, but these change as the stories she tells herself change - the epitome of an unreliable narrator. And her descent into madness (or enlightenment - if you want to read it that way) makes hard reading. She jumps between topics and, to be honest, I really couldn't follow any of her reasoning or understand exactly what was going on. I did keep reading to try and find out, but it didn't even have a particularly satisfying ending.

The first of Atwood's books I have been disappointed by :(
