Amazon Editorial Review:
Here, in one volume: Marjane Satrapi's best-selling, internationally acclaimed memoir-in-comic-strips.

Persepolis is the story of Satrapi's unforgettable childhood and coming of age within a large and loving family in Tehran during the Islamic Revolution; of the contradictions between private life and public life in a country plagued by political upheaval; of her high school years in Vienna facing the trails of adolescence far from her family; of her homecoming--both sweet and terrible; and, finally, of her self-imposed exile from her beloved homeland. It is the chronicle of a girlhood and adolescence at once outrageous and familiar, a young life entwined with the history of her country yet filled with the universal trials and joys of growing up.

Edgy, searingly observant, and candid, often heartbreaking but threaded throughout with raw humor and hard-earned wisdom--Persepolis is a stunning work from one of the most highly regarded, singularly talented graphic artists at work today.

My thoughts on this book: This was one of my first introductions to the graphic format in books. And what an introduction it was! Beautiful and poetic all at once. The graphic format allowed the story to resonant that much more. I tell many people about this book as it was so incredible. The downside is that it has set such a high bar for graphic memoirs, that I'm bound to be easily disappointed in the future.

What a surprise!! I am so moved to tears... Thanks Rootmartin, and thanks zzz. You two are just so great!!! I would have rather you read it first, as I am a bit worried about books getting lost in the mail, after what happened to the previous copy.
I suppose it's at least good news that this book has arrived safely. I'll read it soon and send it on!

Thanks so much for letting me read this, especially as the other copy is confirmed lost. (I received a package with a book in it, and found out that it was supposed to contain two. I didn't think much at first that the envelop was taped over, as we re-use envelops a lot, but on closer inspection the tape went over the stamps. My guess is the package was torn during transist.)

The story - needless to say, it's excellent. Deceptive simple line drawing, but the use of black and white is simply brilliant. I also learned quite a bit about Iran. Marjane has a lot to thank her parents for becoming who she is. They are extraordinary. In the past I have read a bit of Persepolis II but I am glad that I get to read it from the start this time, as I can put her action into perspective, instead of viewing her as a spoiled youth.

For a while my hubby was hoping to be part of the US National dragon boat team who will race in Prague this summer, and for a while I was dreaming of maybe meeting zzz in person to pass this book on. Well, that doesn't happen, but he is going to Hong Kong for some dragon boating so I am taking advantage of their cheaper postage there. (so far their track record has been excellent.) So everybody, fingers crossed.

Whee! It's here along with two other books (from Iraq & Afghanistan) making fantastic the "Axis of Evil" trio! (I love the idea!) LOL
I'm so glad I'll have opportunity to read this after I saw the movie and was completely moved. Some friends of mine already asked me to forward the book when I finish with it. Something's telling me this book will stay here with me for a long time which is why I'm marking it as a part of my permanent collection (I hope root wouldn't mind but this is REALLY something I'd like to keep).
