I enjoyed this, largely due to its magical element. The cooking parts left me a bit cold, and I had the feeling perhaps I had missed something profound. Nevertheless an excellent, non putdownable read, with unexpected twists and turns.

This is the first book in a very long time I have to give the full 10. I only got it in mail yesterday but I had to read it and read it now. Yesterday I barely got out of bed in the morning, I felt that down in the morning, and even though I had started another book earlier, this just had to be read now. And once I started it, I couldn't just put it down.
It's actually the second time I ever read it - I haven't seen the movie and I don't want to either - it simply will not be able to catch all the flavors, scents and everything you just can't do with a camera. The first time I read a copy of this in 2004, after spending a few lonely and upsetting months in Ireland, and I loved the book then (now I wanted to know if I still love it - I do). After reading the copy I had back then, I think that copy ended up in Germany and then who knows where - I should have been in BC back then to follow the life of that copy too.
When I first read this book back then, I enjoyed the story, and it sparked back the joy of reading - something when I hadn't read very good books for quite a while. And it has definitely had its effects on my cooking. Far from as magic as Tita's cooking, there is still something. If I'm on the wrong mood, some foods just don't work out at all, and it must have got something other in my cooking too - the spices, composing the foods like art, passion and the philosophy of cooking. Can't be also a coincidence that when I first run to this book I also discovered two of the greatest chocolatiers in the country.
This book is just a literature version of really, really good chocolate, and after making my mood much much better by just reading it, it will be going to dorng who's also in need of some hot chocolate (so sending some chocolate yogi tea too) to survive the stress of the bureaucracy and paperwork. :)
