Stargirl

This book was chosen because it is on the 2009 Reading Olympics list for Bucks County, and Morrisville's Gifted 6-12 students are required to read one Reading Olympics book per month this school year. Our goal is to get the books on the list, journal about them as we read them, have a release party at the end of the school year, and track the journey of our books next school year. We're excited to see where this book goes!
Since I am having my students read this year's Reading Olympics books I am trying to read many of them myself in order to aid discussions, make recommendations, and put my money where my mouth is, so to speak. I've always heard a lot about Jerry Spinelli, and, until now, I don't believe that I've read any of his books. I figured that I would give Stargirl a shot, especially since it was so short and only $3 from Scholastic. I can't say that I was very impressed. I felt pretty unmoved by the writing style, the vocabulary, the characters, the story line... I do hope that my students will give this book a chance, but overall I was unimpressed.
I will be releasing this book in my classroom until June.
