Classic murder mystery involving a wierd sect, society heiress and numerous other stock characters. I found it very hard to read without see it as a TV drama! Will probably go to the next rugby meet-up or a local OBZ for release.

Thanks so much for this Millycat I am really looking forward to reading it, I love these old fashioned murder mysteries.

I can't help but love old Chief inspector Allen - and Inspector Fox. The dialogue between the two of them is often hilarious, and very sharp, as is some of Allen's sparring with his suspects. Ngaio Marsh was a really good crime writer, and this one has a rather unusual setting in the House of the sacred flame - what we today would probably call a religious cult. Her plots are full of detail allowing the reader to try and work it all out for themselves - but I generally find that pretty hard to do - because she is fiendishly clever.

I need an additional favourite crime writer like I need a hole in the head!

I believe this is the 4th in the series, written during the 1930s and therefore a contemporay of Agatha Christie.

The dialogue between Alleyn and Fox is witty (but I can see the potential to be annoying if it was the same in every book), and there's some implied world-awareness put into the book about the acolytes that got the message across without being too in-your-face about it ("I think the Greeks may have a word for them" being just one example).

Anyway, cant believe that I've got this far without reading Ngaio Marsh books before, and need to keep an eye out for more!
