This delightful litle book was a Christmas present for me in 2007 !! and has been kept, still in its original wrapping tied with red ribbon. Cannot imagine why it has been lying in wait for me. I had opened it and was delighted when I saw what it was as I'd been enthusiastic to my sister-in-law about my pleasure in Anne's "Ex Libris" and was certainly not dropping hints.
I'm pleased to have a nice book like this to be my #700 registration.

This is not original but covers the book so well I decided to use these words cribbed from "Time Out - New York"
n At Large and At Small, Anne Fadiman returns to one of her favorite genres, the familiar essay—a beloved and hallowed literary tradition recognized for both its intellectual breadth and its miniaturist focus on everyday experiences. With the combination of humor and erudition that has distinguished her as one of our finest essayists, Fadiman draws us into twelve of her personal obsessions: from her slightly sinister childhood enthusiasm for catching butterflies to her monumental crush on Charles Lamb, from her wistfulness for the days of letter-writing to the challenges and rewards of moving from the city to the country.
Many of these essays were composed “under the influence” of the subject at hand. Fadiman ingests a shocking amount of ice cream and divulges her passion for Häagen-Dazs Chocolate Chocolate Chip and her brother’s homemade Liquid Nitrogen Kahlúa Coffee (recipe included); she sustains a terrific caffeine buzz while recounting Balzac’s coffee addiction; and she stays up till dawn to write about being a night owl, examining the rhythms of our circadian clocks and sharing such insomnia cures as her father’s nocturnal word games and Lewis Carroll’s mathematical puzzles. At Large and At Small is a brilliant and delightful collection of essays that harkens a revival of a long-cherished genre

So thrilled to have this in my hands as I have Ex Libris on my shelves having enjoyed it many years ago. A lovely edition and I look forward to dipping into this one between my other reading:)

I had high hopes for this one considering my adoration for Ex Libris a previous collection of essays on books and reading by the same author. I read the first few chapters but it just bored me so was abandoned. Moving on to another reader with this one on her wishlist.
