Thank you once again Valpete for this amazing RABCK. I really never expected it, and I just love Geraldine Brooks. This is on our reading list for my book club later this year; I was the one who recommended it, so I am really looking forward to reading it!
Quite an interesting book about the preservation of a gorgeously illustrated Haggadah; th story follows the path of the book back in time, following clues uncovered by Hannah, the book's conservator. As the book travels through Europe, it is rescued miraculously from banishment and we meet those who treasured it, who wanted it banned and who rescued it. Each period of history is very cleverly explained, the war in Sarajevo, WWII, the Inquisition, etc, are all covered in separate chapters, and bringing them all together is Hannah who traces the history of the book through minute items found in it, the wing of an insect, a bit of stain of saltwater, a hair. The weakness of the book, is the choppiness of the chapters. Right when you "get" the names and place in time of the chapter, it's over and on to the next time period. Hannah and her relationships with her mother and her lover also lacked a bit in depth.
Overall a fascinating read. Thank you again Valpete for thinking of me!

Wow, thanks for sending this book my way istop4books!! I've been wanting to read it for awhile now... I am currently reading Geraldine Brooks' "Year of Wonders" and am loving it. I have about 100 pages left to read of "Year of Wonders" before I am through reading it. Then I have one other short novella to read, before I'll begin reading "People of the Book".
Wow, what a phenomenal book!! Geraldine Brooks is an awesome writer... I'd 1st heard of Geraldine Brooks a couple of years ago, but never read any of her books until this year. A couple of months ago I read "Year of Wonders", which I thoroughly enjoyed. However, I think I lover "People of the Book" so much more.
I love how Geraldine Brooks tells the story of the Haggadah's history from the present working backward to its original creator. I also loved the story of Hanna and how she became involved with working with the Haggadah and her life along the alternating chapters of Hanna's life and that of the Haggadah's history.... The storytelling is amazing. I loved the characters. Brooks's attention to detail is amazing.
Lots of surprises in this book... Hanna's relationship with her mother and how it turned out was surprising. We learn about who her father really was and so on. The ending was fun too with twists and turns that kept me hooked reading this book.
I have "March" also written by Geraldine Brooks to be read after I've read a few other books first. I cannot wait to read "March".
I have pm'd Shroffland and am awaiting a mailing address before sending this novel off.

Arrived safe and sound yesterday. I'll try to read it within the next three weeks and send it along. Thank you for sharing this lovely hardcover edition.
Just started this, and had to say that 45 pages in and I'm hooked! I imagine it won't take me long to read it, since the story seems to be pulling me along....
This arrived in the mail today. Thanks to istop4books for starting this Ray. I'll be reading it soon and then perhaps start another ring.
The note below attributed to an "Anonymous Reader" is my JE - This book, very well researched and written by Geraldine Brooks, is a winning combination of history and suspense. Howevever, I did find it plodding at times and had to force myself to keep going. It was not a book that called to me, begging to be read. I liked Year of Wonders and March much better.
I'll be passing this along to a member of my book club.
