You know Anne Frank's story - at least the bare outlines. But how could it happen? Who was responsible? How could so many "ordinary people" have participated in - or turned their backs on - their neighbors' suffering? Couldn't it have been stopped or prevented?

Written in two languages, with photos on nearly every page, this book sheds light on the political, economic and social context in which the Holocaust took place. Unanswered, of course, are the inescapable questions: why did it happen and could it - will it - happen again?

This book was published by the Anne Frank Foundation (Anne Frank-Fonds), which was established by her father, Otto Frank. The Foundation is dedicated to promoting better understanding between different religions, serving the cause of peace between people and to encouraging international contacts between the young. I have to repeat myself: Wauw, that was fast! The mailman just delivered two books sent from New York on Monday! I'm impressed. Thanks to Annulla, I'll be re-reading Anne Frank's Diary and reading for the first time Anne Frank in the World. I'm looking forward to it a lot. I'll be back with more later. Thanks again.

Interesting and very brief account of the life of Anne Frank and, more importantly, historical developments between 1929 and 1945. Scary! I'm sending this and the diary off to Arina in Portugal tomorrow.

Journal Entry 5 by Arina from Lisboa - City, Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Wednesday, May 28, 2003
Thanks tutmarie! I'll try to pass this along to the next BC on the bookring as fast as i can.

Journal Entry 6 by Arina from Lisboa - City, Lisboa (cidade) Portugal on Friday, June 13, 2003
This other book, published by the Anne Frank foundation, and writen both in english and in german, and with a lot of photos from that time, helps to understand the political, economic and social context in which the Holocaust took place, as well as introduces you to the characters mentioned on Anne's diary. It's quite interesting though some pictures may couse you the shivers.

This one is going along with the diary, to the hands of a BC in Germany. Hope you enjoy them, Nikel27!

This is quite a useful introduction to the history surrounding Anne Frank, and also a good way of brushing up your German! (I was trying to read both sets of captions to see if they said the same thing, but my German is a bit too rusty (and was never that good in the first place, despite having lived in Germany for 4 months!)).

I'm not sure which are more disturbing: the photos from the concentration camps, or the more recent photos of neo-nazi activity in Europe :-(

Sending this on to casseytara along with the diary.

Informative, educational, disturbing, haunting. It's still amazing that one man could wield so much power and influence.

Now on the way to welch.

Received in mail a couple days ago.

Journal Entry 15 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Wednesday, October 15, 2003
This arrived safely in Missouri with its companion, the Anne Frank Diary. This book will certainly complement the other. Looking forward to it!

UPDATE: 1/3/04....My apologies for being so slow. I've been backlogged with bookrings/rays and am finally getting to this one!

1/23/04...Oh my I am nearly to the end of this and I don't want it to end! I feel like I know Anne now! It's so sad and I realized this is the 60th anniversary of their final year in the secret annex. I was even reading Anne's journal entry for a day exactly 60 years ago and it gave me chills. Will pass it on as soon as I've finished.

1/26/04...Waiting to hear from the next person before I send it on.

Journal Entry 16 by Mamikaem from Maryland Heights, Missouri USA on Wednesday, January 28, 2004
I finished this wonderful book but ladyofunicorns is not replying to my PMs and Annulla cannot be reached! So I will sit on this until someone else wants it!

LATER...sure enough! Not ten minutes after I posted this message, ladyofunicorns PMed to say she wants the books! They will go out to her this week!

Mailed to ladyofunicorns on 1/29/04.

All I can say is Wow...I learned a lot reading this book. Things we were never taught in school, at least not what I can remember. I really enjoyed the book and hope to get to the Diary soon!

Journal Entry 19 by ladyofunicorns at Santa Fe, New Mexico USA on Tuesday, March 15, 2011
I am trying to reach annulla as this book and the diary one are both hers and I want to send them back to her. I sent a pm to her back in January and never heard back. Am not sure what to do at this point. I will try another pm to her...
