No. 3 on the original 1001 books list.
I really liked this book, I had been disappointed with The Autograph Man, but this is Smith back at her best. A book of families, the clashes of different backgrounds and colours and the world of academia.
Howard Belsey is a professor and involved with academic war with Monty Kipps, a fellow academic. Their personal differences affect both families. Howard's three children are growing up and away from him, his eldest Jerome, a Christian, goes to stay with the "enemy", Zora is following her father's footsteps at the university and the youngest, Levi, is trying to become street.
Richly drawn characters and family drama.
To be added to the 1001-Library, then sent to Carole

Received today, thanks :)
I was hoping this would be as good as White Teeth and I wasn't disappointed. I didn't particularly like most the characters but they were all believable and well written.
Thanks again to Soffitta1 for sending it to me. I'll return it to the library now.

Thanks Caroley!
I really liked this book. Really well written, richly drawn characters, and makes you think about opposing races, genders and generations. Really good.
