Plucked from the bookcase at The Christie hospital.
I shall be putting more than one back when I go for my next chemo, never fear.
This looks like it might be rather overlong but I am enjoying it so far.

This took a while to get going - it is one of those modern too long books - I for one am not impressed that a writer can spin a tale out over 500 or odd pages.
However, about 200 pages in it suddenly improved and I found myself rushing through it to get to the end, which was a bit melodramatic in my humble opinion.
Like Cold Mountain, it also has one of those endings / epilogues which makes you wish you hadn't started the book in the first place!
The publishers are also cynically going for the kind of reader who enjoyed The Shadow of the Wind - it has an almost identical cover and there is a front cover endorsement from that bastion of quality the Daily Express saying "If you like Sebastian Faulks and Carlos Ruis Zafon, you'll love this".
All of which conspired to put me right off the book initially.
Glad I perservered though - Sansom has done his historical homework and writes well. This is his first 20th century novel - he normally writes thrillers set in Tudor England so I may have a go at those as they sound intriguing.
