Thank you! This should put me in the Christmas spirit; looks like it will not take long at all to read (a rarity for me).
I finished this during breaks at work today. Richard was a wonderful character, especially when he was poring over the ledgers for his formal-wear store.
Two of my favorite quotes:
(page 25) (when the Evans family luxuriates in having lots of living space at Mrs. Parkin's mansion in the Salt Lake City Avenues neighborhood) "What we may have lost in family togetherness, we more than made up for in sanity."
(pages 83-4) "How wise Mary had been. Mary who knew the pain of a Father sending his son away on that first Christmas morn, knowing full well the path that lay ahead. Mary understood Christmas. The tears in the Bible showed that."
I enjoyed the descriptive passages about beautiful objects and the historical vignettes, such as when Mary described how people left outer foyer doors open if they were receiving callers.
A fire inspector came by the library and saw me reading this, which resulted in a very enjoyable conversation about books.
