I first heard of this book when I joined BookCrossing and have had it on my wishlist ever since. Since I had some birthday coupons from Borders, I decided to treat myself!

Not quite what I was expecting, but still a very compelling book. I was expecting the murder and mayhem to be a more integral part of the fair. Instead, the murder and mayhem were more of a parallel story to the fair, never quite intertwining with it, but existing side by side. In the end, I understood the author's intent to juxtapose this destructive darkness and despair with the constructive light and hope of the fair; to show how the fair was exhibiting what civilization at its noblest could be while reaching for the heavens while the murder and madness were showing what civilization at its worst had become while descending into hell. I wish this book had more photographs, or even drawings, so I could actually see what Chicago accomplished in 1893. Luckily, it's the Internet age and I found some here and here and lots of other places.
