"Deep in the heart of the dusty Kenyan desert a train of heavily laden camels wind their way slowly throught the bush. The camels' panniers are stuffed to bursting, not with grain or medical supplies, but with books of every imaginable variety.
Mididima is a nomadic settlement so tiny that it is almost invisible. Into this remote world comes an unexpected wealth of literature - tips on surviving an avalanche, the adventures of Tom Sawyer, vegetarian cookbooks: all are eagerly devoured under the blazing Kenyan sun.
Volunteer Fi Sweeney, her heart filled with passion and possibilities, is surprised to discover that the project divides friends and neightbours. To Kanika, who reads every book she can lay her hands on, the Camel Bookmobile brings hope. But to some it represents the inevitable destruction of a fragile way of life..."

A very nice book! I did expect it to be more about books and less about everything else but still I liked it a lot. African life and customs of a small tribe were so interesting and also the relationships between people.
I'll send this as a bookray to Annelis next.

The library camels arrived at Kerava, thank you! I'll start reading during the week-end.
I am reading this book rather slowly because I enjoy it very much and I don't want it to end too soon. And I have to read an Italian book at the same time for my lessons.
I still have a quarter of the book left. The book is of current interest to me as Sirah it collecting books to take to an orphanage in Kenia. I'll meet her on Saturday and give her some more books. I think she would like to read this book after visiting Kenia.
I happen to have Polenka's new address already. I'll sent the book to her after a few days.
Thank you for this lovely book, Thy and Chania!
This is my #48 in 2009 KEEP THEM MOVING CHALLENGE arranged by Guinaveve.
This book counts for Kenya in my A Book From Every Country Challenge.

Wonderful book! I loved this. Books, exotic Africa, customs and life of a small tribe, lots of interesting characters... what else can you wish for. I was little bit disappointed with the ending though; I had anticipated a kind of fairy tale ending, where everyone would fulfill their dreams of love, of education in the Distant City. I want to know what happens next to the characters!
Sending to ruzena as soon as I get her address.

I anticipated that this is a book that I'll anyway snitch for my private collection, so I didn't hurry on to read it. Now I started reading in great expectations, but, halfway through the book, I was bored and disappointed. The description of the persons and their lives - however interesting they may be - was so scrupulously told and so thoroughly interpreted that it was just like a lesson or a report, and left hardly anything to me as a reader.
Even if the description did not touch me, I found the themes important. The author even succeeded in bluffing me: at first I was annoyed about the benevolent white lady looking an African village from high above. But towards the end, I understood that it was the exact point. So my stars to the book are the average grade given to the second-rate literary style, with truisms of cultural differencies, and to the theme of cultural imperialism. Accordingly, I wouldn't criticize the end but rather I once more learnt that books must be read to the outcome.

I liked this book a lot. Exotic Africa... but some of the problems still similar than in anywhere in the world.
Next stop lukutuoli. Part of MINKULA's wish list challenge.

Thanks for this wish list book as well as for the cute surprise I found from the envelope!!
I was a little bit disappointed with this book. Although the themes and African surroundings of this book were interesting, I couldn't help feeling bored with the book and the reading was a struggle for me. It took me much more time to read this book as it usually takes.

CONTROLLED RELEASE NOTES:
It was hard for me to grab the book, but once I got past a few first chapters I was immersed in it. I found it very interesting to read about a life in a small tribe without many connections to the outside world. Now I will send this book to Kirjakko (finally).
'Camel Books' have been travelling for nearly eight years!
I'm currently reading Stephen Fry's autobiography, which probably could not be further from the life of a small African tribe... The heatwave we are having could go well together with this book. Thanks MiuM, I had totally forgotten that you had tagged me with this.

I'm a little less than half-way through and I wanted to comment that I'm enjoying this book very much. It has a slow pace, like a camel walking. The story sucks you in and you are miles away. Hours pass without you noticing that your bedtime should have been ages ago or you didn't do half the chores you had planned. That is a sign of a good book.
Odd. I'm quite sure I've journalled this book when I finished it and below my second JE it reads: "Two more journal entries", but I can't open them. When I click from where I should see all nine people who have journalled this book so far, the text about two more entries disappears, but I still see only two entries from myself. Mysterious.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
On offer at the Early Bird meet-up in Tikkurila, if I can make it (for heaven's sakes, it's Saturday! Why don't we sleep when we could?).
Nobody took the book, but I didn't want to release in the wild just yet. Let's see what happens in the next meet-up, whenever that is.

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Many Finnish bookcrossers have read this already and nobody took it at the last meet-up, so perhaps the caravan needs to find a new watering hole.
