There's an old saying: "The worst movies are made from the best books." I'm not sure if that can be applied universally, but it is certainly true in this instance. Here is an excellent adventure story that was then dumbed down (and re-written) into a movie that was, at best, mediocre. So, if you saw the movie, please don't judge this book by it.
This is my favorite Crichton novel; interesting characters involved in an exciting (yet completely believable) plot. The ERTS crew was after a certain kind of industrial diamond, one essential to certain kinds of laser works; they were utterly destroyed by ... something. Now the 2nd crew, under the leadership of hard-driving Karen Ross, must go into the Congo under false pretenses, clear up the mystery and find the diamonds before one of the other industrial consortiums discovers the truth about the first ERTS crew. Time is short. And, then just to complicate things, primatologist Peter Elliott joins the 2nd crew and brings along Amy, a gorilla with a sign language vocabulary of 620 words. And now Amy is finger painting a scene she should not know, an old temple which shows up in digitally transmitted scene of the first crew's destruction.

Thinking of rereading, I remember liking it even if it had moments of illogical gorillas...thanks for leaving it for me just when I was thinking of Michael Crichten's recent passing. Previous journal entry is correct that the film was monstrous!

My husband read this too and enjoyed our return to the Congo. The movie was on some channel too, in Spanish, when might actually have improved it for me.
