I am not sure what category I should have used for this - it's historical, fantasy, romance, an epic. It is part of a series, so I hope that plucking one out of the whole series won't frustrate the finder too mcch.
I enjoyed the books, I do feel that the earlier books are the better ones. As the series grows, so too does the size of the book, which I suspect indicates that the publisher has become more timid in relation to editing Gabaldon's work. The story requires a suspension of belief, but if you can allow yourself to be carried away with the story it is an enjoyable journey.
