I had not heard of John Hunter before picking up this book, but he was clearly a man ahead of his time. While some of the details are gruesome, it is nonetheless a fascinating history of a man utterly devoted to uncovering all he could in his chosen field. I don't know if I would have liked John Hunter personally, but his (and later his students') countless contributions to medical, anatomical and surgical knowledge are astonishing.
Moore writes for everyone, not just people in the medical field. Anyone who enjoys history, science, or biographies will enjoy this book. (If you are squeamish, however, you might want to pass on this one!)
