From the author of the New York Times– bestselling novel Labyrinth comes another haunting tale of secrets, murder, and the occult set in both nineteenth-century and twenty-first-century France.

I n 1891, young Léonie Vernier and her brother Anatole arrive in the beautiful town of Rennes-les-Bains, in southwest France. They’ve come at the invitation of their widowed aunt, whose mountain estate, Domain de la Cade, is famous in the region. But it soon becomes clear that their aunt Isolde—and the Domain—are not what Léonie had imagined. The villagers claim that Isolde’s late husband died after summoning a demon from the old Visigoth sepulchre high on the mountainside. A book from the Domain’s cavernous library describes the strange tarot pack that mysteriously disappeared following the uncle’s death. But while Léonie delves deeper into the ancient mysteries of the Domain, a different evil stalks her family—one which may explain why Léonie and Anatole were invited to the sinister Domain in the first place.

More than a century later, Meredith Martin, an American graduate student, arrives in France to study the life of Claude Debussy, the nineteenth century French composer. In Rennesles- Bains, Meredith checks into a grand old hotel—the Domain de la Cade. Something about the hotel feels eerily familiar, and strange dreams and visions begin to haunt Meredith’s waking hours. A chance encounter leads her to a pack of tarot cards painted by Léonie Vernier, which may hold the key to this twenty-first century American’s fate . . . just as they did to the fate of Léonie Vernier more than a century earlier.

I haven't read this book yet but I would like to offer it for a bookring as I really enjoyed Labyrinth..

Journal Entry 4 by astro2480 from Lismore, New South Wales Australia on Monday, December 8, 2008
As exciting as Labyrinth and loved every minute of it, although Labyrinth's ending was a little more exciting from memory. It was very much the same basic story line, but who cares when you enjoy it! Thank you so much for sharing.

Ready to send on as soon as I have Lisagt's address.

Journal Entry 7 by Lisagt from Holsworthy, New South Wales Australia on Monday, February 16, 2009
Well, after a number of false starts I have finally finished this tome! Not as good as Labyrinth but still enjoyable. It took me a while to gel the twin storylines together but it all came together satisfactorily in the end.
I will now contact the next reader and get this bookring moving again...thanx again frangipani08

Well, it took me a wile to finish - it is a big book after all. I'm always a sucker for parallel stories. I enjoyed the atmosphere of the setting, both in Paris and at the Domaine de la Cade but I couldn't figure out if the author wanted to tell a spooky ghost story or a mystery story. That said, I did enjoy the story.

Thanks for hosting,frangipani08 and for sending it on, easterngirl.

I have dg7500's address and will get it out this week.

Journal Entry 13 by wingdg7500wing from Lancaster, Pennsylvania USA on Saturday, June 13, 2009
Arrived safely in this mornings mail. I have another book to finish first, but hope to get started on this within the week.

6/30/09: Thoroughly enjoyed this one...liked the characters, and the back & forth between timelines kept things even more interesting. My only little 'nitpick' would be the amount of French the author threw in. Most times the language switch did not seem necessary to the plotline, and it wasn't a word here or there, with lines that hint at the meaning...just random words tossed around, I'm guessing to try to give the story more historic authenticity. For me, the language issue was distracting, and downright annoying at times. Putting that aside though, I really did enjoy Sepulchre.
