Another in this lovely series of "mysteries". Mma Ramotswe, owner of the No. 1 Ladies' Detective Agency in Botswana, relies more on instinct and observation than on forensic evidence or intense grilling of suspects. As is usual in this series, there are several cases:
Mr. J.L.B. Matekoni, aka Precious Ramotswe's husband, pursues the case of the husband who may be having an affair. Mma Makutsi, assistant detective, whose mind is often on her upcoming marriage to a furniture dealer, pursues the matter of the stolen supplies in a printing business. Mma Ramotswe looks into the mysterious deaths of three hospital patients, all in the same bed, all on Fridays, all at the same time of day.
This last mystery was also shown on the HBO series of the same name. My recollection is that the resolution of the case was a bit different but I could be remembering wrong. That series does an excellent job of capturing the mood and sense of the place and people.
The series is really about morality. How most people have a sense of right and wrong and if given the right chance will do the right thing. There is a gentleness and hopefulness, along with what others have called "charm" in this series. The thought Mma Ramotswe has when Mma Makutsi decides to leave the agency, for example, is that Mma Makutsi is wearing "resignation shoes". This different way of looking at the world is delightful and enjoyable.
