On one level a fairly short and descriptive tale told by a butler about his present employment(1950's), a short journey to visit an old colleague, and rememberances about the heydey of the house (1930's) in which he works, it's inhabitants, and his own career.
But this also has many other levels thinking about duty, loyalty and service, how far we manage our own lives, how we balance what we want with the needs of others and how we can be blind to our own faults and repressions.... and that's just for starters.
Ishiguro paints a picture of another era and drew me into it's world seemingly effortlesssly - I was just there and very much aware. Great!

I expected to really enjoy this book as I had recently read another of Kazuo Ishiguro's books and I remember enjoying the film of this book.
However, although I thought it was a very clever book with the butler telling you all sorts of things that he seemed oblivious to, the butler himself grated on me which is unfortunate when he's the character you are spending the whole book with!
So I'm only going to give it a 7 although I think it deserves more!

Received in the post today, thanks very much. I have actually never read this one, although I remember seeing the film sometime ago, so looking forward to reading the book now. Thanks also for the postcard, will go into my collection etc.
