Pickax's favorite columnist, James Qwilleran, is enjoying a brief holiday in the nearby town of Black Creek - but his two Siamese, who prefer the spaciousness of their home, beg to differ. The blissful tranquility is soon interrupted by the discovery of a body floating down the creek. And a possible motive for his murder is suggested when several gold nuggets are found in his possession. Might he have been illegally prospecting for gold? If so, it seems he wasn't the only one in search of an easy fortune. And his competitor is far more determined to strike it rich...

Edited for book review June 2009
Another of what I class as a "cosy" murder mystery. It doesn't dwell much, nearly at all, on the death of a guest at the Nutcracker Inn, where James Qwilleran is staying with his cats Koko & Yum Yum. There seems to be very little in the way of actual mystery but instead there's lots of characters & historical tales - I especially liked the Saturday Night Brawl at the Hotel Booze (great name for a bar!)- & everything is neatly tied up at the end....with Koko's help of course!

This is the first I've read of these "Cat who went" books but I've seen plenty around but all with different types of cats on the cover, blacks, tabbies, white persians...why when the cats are Siamese? Anyhow, I wasn't sure I'd enjoy this book (not really being a cat lover) & only read it as the Ultimate Challenge for this month is "ANIMALS" but I did enjoy it. Qwill is a likeable enough character & I'll be happy to read more featuring Koko & Yum Yum.

Journal Entry 5 by Kaykee from Gateshead, Tyne and Wear United Kingdom on Sunday, November 29, 2009
A friend of mine found this book on a seat overlooking the castle, when she was on holiday on the beautiful Holy Island. She does not use the internet much so I said I would journal it for her. When she has read it she will release it somewhere in Newcastle.
