An elderly woman dies in a retirement home in an English village. On the day of her funeral, two policemen rush to stop the burial. Her son has turned over to police a letter received from his mother stating, "By the time you read this, I shall be dead, killed by an unknown hand..."
The autopsy does not turn up evidence of foul play, but the police persist in their investigations. Gertrude Powell died with secrets still unanswered and it appears that something in her past might have led to her murder - but was she murdered? She was married three times, but no one knows anything about her second husband, not even his name. And what is the mysterious Pragmatic Sanction that Gertrude claims is responsible for her death?
