From the blurb:
It is the mid-1800s. At Sweet Home in Kentucky, an era is ending as slavery comes under attack from the abolitionists. The worlds of Halle and Paul D. are to be destroyed in a cataclysm of torment and agony. The world of Sethe, howeverm is to turn from one of love to one of violence and death -the death of Seths's baby daughter Beloved, whose name is the single word on the tombstone, who died at her mother's hands, and who will return to claim retribution.
This is Toni Morrison's fifth novel and winner of the 1988 Pulitzer Prize. In 1993 Morrison won the Nobel Prize for Literature.

I finished this book last night. At first I found the style of writing made it difficult to get involved in the story.Once I got further into the story the book was more gripping. I will post on to the next person after the weekend.
edit 23/1/09 - next person asked to be skipped, so posted to chocdrop 20/1/09. Sorry for the delay.

Book arrived today. Will make it the next book I read.
I tried to read this book a few years ago, but couldn't get into it. I still found it a little difficult to read at first, but I'm glad that I managed to stick with it this time.
I posted it to davemurray101 4 days ago. Thanks for sharing, Blaze30.

A great read. A story of the dark period after the civil war when slavery was abolished, but repressive measures against African-Americans increased. Thanks again to Blaze30. will pass on to sarahmuh asap

Received in the post today from davemurray 101 - thank you! Have a book on the go at the moment, but will start this next. I see I am last on the ray at the moment - so my husband would like to join after me. Looking forward to reading this, thank you Blaze30.
I really enjoyed this book. Her language is amazing and the way she depicts life in those times, the hardships of slavery and the prevailing attitudes in society is nothing short of brilliant. A really original touch to a dark and haunting story.
Will try and keep this ring going. Will put a post up in the bookray forum - this book has to keep travelling!

Arrived yesterday, will finish what I am reading and then get straight onto it.
15 July 09 - I enjoyed this book very much although found it confusing at times as it switched backward and forwards through time and had to go back occasionally to re read a chapter again once I had figured out that time period it was in. You know that slavery and the abuse they had to go through happened, but reading it in black and white somehow makes it all seem more real. This book was posted out today.

Received the book earlier this week - thank you for passing on kingfan30 and Blaze30 for sharing!
Should start it this weekend.
Should start it this weekend.
Although I agree with the previous comments re the interesting points about slavery, I am actually quite divided about whether I enjoyed the story or not. This is probably due to the way it was written, both because of the style and the jumps in time.
An interesting read anyway so thanks to everyone for passing the book along!

WILD RELEASE NOTES:
Feeling a little guilty, this was on my list of 100 books that changed the world, and it won the Nobel Proze for Literature, but it was just far too literary for me.
I just didn't get it, perhaps I need to reread and concentrate more - but I need stories that have a begining a middle and an end I found the jumps in time confusing and some chapters were so poetic they did my head in.
I really appreciate that a fellow bookcrosser took the time to send it all the way across the world.
