"The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign
to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard. Anyone who despairs of the
individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless
mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a
chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school.
Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools - especially for girls - that offer a
balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it
chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists
and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration
of the humanitarian spirit."

A powerful book that shows that a single person can make a difference. A definite read for everyone.

While reading this it was all I could talk about. A real life hero who had the guts to do what many of us wish we could.

I was a bit slow getting into this book and thought it would be a slow read but I was wrong! Greg is an amazing man and you have to admire his passion and dedication for what he does. However, I think I admire his wife, Tara, even more as she puts up with his constant absences into situations fraught with danger and uncertainty. Thanks for sharing this book mcbeff! I will pass it to aleonblue at our January meetup in a few weeks time.

What a fantastic story - I loved the metamophosis of Greg Mortenson from someone with a germ of an idea to someone who actually made it happen (with a few mishaps on the way) to the extent of being able to influence political leaders to think differently. This also gave a very accurate and non-judemental picture of what's really happening in Afghanistan after 911...

Love it!

What an inspiring read! He has done so much and yet is so unassuming; All he wanted to do was help the people there. I just love the way it all eventually came to be .... not just with building one school but .... wow!... he built more.... and more!!!

It was also interesting to read about the area and to get a different perspective on the way of life over there. I can't stop thinking about this book. I am so glad I read it. Thanks mcbeff for sharing.

"Three Cuppas" has arrived in Canberra. I was feeling a bit parched!
Although, I have had a flood of bookrings in August. But I'm getting through them, so I hope to be starting this next week. This book comes with such high recomendations.

I love the bookmark!
Also, love the lovely WA postcard. Thanks Carole888!

I really enjoyed this, it reads better than some fiction. I was sorry to finish the story, I wanted to hear how it all continues, in both Afganistan and Pakistan. Me thinks that some further web-surfing is going to be required ;-)

Mortenson is so self-sacrificing and has such a high tolerance of risk as does his wife and children. Quite amazing and admirable.

I have amberC's address, but I'll wait to send this until she can respond to my PM, and let's me know if she is ready for it yet.

Thanks for sharing this mcbeff, I'll have to say it. It is an AMAZING tale.

This is a very inspiring story that encourages the reader to try to make a difference in the world. Greg Mortenson is a wonderful person, very selfless.
As a book I think it could be improved by a ruthless editor. It takes a while to get going, I found the first third didn't really hold my attention. Its much longer than it needs to be. Having said that I'm very glad I read it.
Off to bekoh today.

Sorry to but in but, I had felt that I wanted to read more of Mortenson's story and now we can!
Continuing on from 3 cups of tea is his new book "Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan…"
I'll be looking out for it.
:-)

Journal Entry 38 by bekoh from Fern Bay, New South Wales Australia on Sunday, January 31, 2010
I agree...an inspiring story. I also think Greg's wife and children are just heroic as he is.

I couldn't help but reflect on the difference between the children of families in the Pakistani villges that were passionate about their education and the obstacles they had to overcome to go to school compared to some kids here in Australia that have to be dragged to school resentfully.

I really got a lot out of this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel.

Journal Entry 41 by wingLadyIndigowing from Orange, New South Wales Australia on Monday, April 5, 2010
It took me several attempts to read this - the writing style just did not grab me and then some way through it, all of a sudden i was turning page after page...
I have to agree with charliewendy's comments about it being longer than it needed to be and that it needed a much better edit.

It always makes me curious that people help out in countries other than their own; surely there are pockets of poverty in his own backyard, but then $100 goes a longer way somewhere like Pakistan...

It was interesting to read of the events surrounding and following 9/11; Greg Mortenson is certainly paving the road to understanding.

I enjoyed his meeting and marrying Tara; she is one special woman to support him in his efforts.

Thanks for sharing... now for at least one cup of tea...

I'll check with dancesports that she is ready to receive and will post to her

Like many other readers I had trouble making a start with this one, but once I did make it past the thrid or fourth chapter then I was able to progress quite quickly, there is another slow section just after half way but then it improved again. Generally I prefer fiction to non-fiction and I think this is another reason why it took me a while to get started. I did learn a lot from this book and Greg Mortenson is certainly a rare and amazing person.

I feel really terrible, I just cannot get into this book at all :(
I've opened and closed it many times since receiving it, hoping the enthusiasm that everyone else has had for this book would suddenly catch on but no such luck for me.
So it is with sadness that I must journal my first bookring book as a 'not read' book.
