Three Cups of Tea: One Man's Mission to Promote Peace . . . One School at a Time

"The astonishing, uplifting story of a real-life Indiana Jones and his humanitarian campaign
to use education to combat terrorism in the Taliban's backyard. Anyone who despairs of the
individual's power to change lives has to read the story of Greg Mortenson, a homeless
mountaineer who, following a 1993 climb of Pakistan's treacherous K2, was inspired by a
chance encounter with impoverished mountain villagers and promised to build them a school.
Over the next decade he built fifty-five schools - especially for girls - that offer a
balanced education in one of the most isolated and dangerous regions on earth. As it
chronicles Mortenson's quest, which has brought him into conflict with both enraged Islamists
and uncomprehending Americans, Three Cups of Tea combines adventure with a celebration
of the humanitarian spirit."
A powerful book that shows that a single person can make a difference. A definite read for everyone.
While reading this it was all I could talk about. A real life hero who had the guts to do what many of us wish we could.

"Three Cuppas" has arrived in Canberra. I was feeling a bit parched!
Although, I have had a flood of bookrings in August. But I'm getting through them, so I hope to be starting this next week. This book comes with such high recomendations.
I love the bookmark!
Also, love the lovely WA postcard. Thanks Carole888!
Mortenson is so self-sacrificing and has such a high tolerance of risk as does his wife and children. Quite amazing and admirable.
I have amberC's address, but I'll wait to send this until she can respond to my PM, and let's me know if she is ready for it yet.
Thanks for sharing this mcbeff, I'll have to say it. It is an AMAZING tale.

Sending off to charliewendy - next on the list
As a book I think it could be improved by a ruthless editor. It takes a while to get going, I found the first third didn't really hold my attention. Its much longer than it needs to be. Having said that I'm very glad I read it.
Off to bekoh today.
Sorry to but in but, I had felt that I wanted to read more of Mortenson's story and now we can!
Continuing on from 3 cups of tea is his new book "Stones into Schools: Promoting Peace with Books, Not Bombs, in Afghanistan…"
I'll be looking out for it.
:-)
I couldn't help but reflect on the difference between the children of families in the Pakistani villges that were passionate about their education and the obstacles they had to overcome to go to school compared to some kids here in Australia that have to be dragged to school resentfully.
I really got a lot out of this book and am looking forward to reading the sequel.

thanks bekoh :)
i do have some reading ahead of it, but will read as soon as i can and send off to next reader
;)
I have to agree with charliewendy's comments about it being longer than it needed to be and that it needed a much better edit.
It always makes me curious that people help out in countries other than their own; surely there are pockets of poverty in his own backyard, but then $100 goes a longer way somewhere like Pakistan...
It was interesting to read of the events surrounding and following 9/11; Greg Mortenson is certainly paving the road to understanding.
I enjoyed his meeting and marrying Tara; she is one special woman to support him in his efforts.
Thanks for sharing... now for at least one cup of tea...
I'll check with dancesports that she is ready to receive and will post to her
;)

I've opened and closed it many times since receiving it, hoping the enthusiasm that everyone else has had for this book would suddenly catch on but no such luck for me.
So it is with sadness that I must journal my first bookring book as a 'not read' book.
Will PM you mcbeff for your address.
