A Penguin 60's classic - these are wonderful little books published in celebration of Penguin's sixtieth anniversary, and have given me a taste of authors I'd probably never have chosen in the normal course of events.
The author's first published story, much admired by Flaubert and Zola.
'A group of travellers are fleeing occupied Rouen by coach to Dieppe. Forced to accept the courtesan in thier midst, their baser instincts are brought to the surface when they are faced with a terrifying dilemma.'
This well told tale illustrates human nature at its most selfish and arrogant.

Released on Sunday, April 27, 2003 at Beside the giant doughnut on groyne by pier. in brighton, England United Kingdom.
Not a perfect release location, since Boule de Suif translates as 'Suet Dumpling' but the best I could do!
NB The Giant Doughnut is an affectionate or possibly derogatory nickname for a large copper sculpture near the Palace Pier.
