Snømann er forteller i denne besettende og skarpskodde fremtidsromanen. Han er tilsynelatende den eneste overlevende etter en miljøkatastrofe som har etterlatt en jord full av vrakgods og avfall og lumske rovdyt som er avlet fram i laboratoriene. Helt alene er han riktignok ikke. Han er omgitt av crakerne, genspleisede menneskelignende vesener, som han har reddet fra utryddelseskatastrofen.
Hver dag blir en kamp for mannen som opprinnelig her Jimmy, som ble fanget inn av den maktglade og gemiale Crake, og som elsket Oryx. Hvordan skal han finne forklaringen på det som har skjedd, og hvordan skal han unnslippe utslettelse?
