A refreshing story about a strong pioneer woman who created wealth for her family without a husband. She guided the family toward their prosperity. I feel I'd have liked the relationship between Alexandra and Carl better developed, but this is no romance novel. Cather's description of the land and the people on it put me into the story. I found it difficult to put down from time to time. I so much enjoyed a time of life where work was far more physical, but life itself was better enjoyed.
