'In this new approach to Jane Austen's personal experience and artistic usage of Bath, Maggie Lane investigates the rich diversity of scene and occupation with made the place of powerful an influence upon the novelist's imagination.
Focusing on such aspects of the late Georgian city as 'Taking the Waters', 'Shopping', 'Public Entertainment', 'Walks and Drives', she amplifies quotations from the letters and novels with readers.
The result is a lively and well-researched study which evokes the city at the height of its popularity, and which is sure to add to modern readers' understanding and enjoyment of 'Northanger Abbey' and 'Persuation'.
The text is superbly complementary by Bridget Sudworth's line drawings. Author and artist have collaborated closely to produce a fascinating and attractive book of lasting value which will delight as well as inform.
Maggie Lane is the co-founder of the Bath and Bristol branch of the Jane Austen Society, and has contributed articles on the novelist's local connection to the journals of both the British and the American Jane Austen Societies.
Her previous books include 'The Jane Austen Quiz and Puzzle Book', 'Jane Austen's Family', 'Jane Austen's England' and 'Literary Daughters'.
Bridget Sudworth trained at Kingston College of Art in 3-D Design. For 8 years she was Head of Art at Bristol Grammer School, a post from which she recently resigned to concertrate on freelance work.'

Found for 99p in a local Oxfam shop. Published a little while back, but when does Jane date badly?

An interesting, if slightly dated little book obviously written for the tourist market in Bath, but none the worse for that I thought.
Fascinating reading even if you haven't made it to Bath yet and followed in JA's footsteps, unlike myself who went with my very own 'Mama' a few years back and dragged the poor woman round every JA notable building I could find! I *think* she's forgiven me now... Yes, saw Laura Place - how I subdued a very unladylike squeek of joy when I saw the name of the street whilst on the bus tour, and Gay Street and even Trim Street. I crossed Great Pulteney Street, Gt Pulteney Bridge, went into the Abbey, peered into the Pump Room (sadly the only day we could get in, you could only go in if you were prepared to stump up for an vvvv expensive tea), had almost to be forcibly dragged from the JA museum and searched in vain for Bath Oliver biscuits.
I'm not sure if JA would appreciate the city in the 21st Century, though more people visit for leisure rather than for health as was in her day, and I can't think what she'd say when she encountered mixed bathing!! Shameful!
An interesting book which I'll probably make AVL after I've offered it to my NZ cousin when she visits in October/November this year.

Decided to release this book to ClassicReader25 who organised a Crafting RABCK for all us craft orientated Bookcrossers. Seeing as this is a fabulous idea and I saw ClassicReader25 is a very keen Jane Austen fan, I thought she might appreciate this little book.
Posted last week from RAF Wyton post office. Can't believe I forgot to PM before!!
I hope you enjoy this sneaky peak at Bath, a place of mixed emotions for Jane Austen, and for Anne Elliot in 'Persuasion' (my very favourite JA novel) but a place I really enjoyed visiting and would willingly go back to for another wander about. And a Sally Lunn bun too! Oooh, and a quick pamper in the new Spa. And High Tea in the Pump Room.

A charming little book sent as a gift by fellow bookcrosser AgnesXnitt, looks like it will be a nice companion to my Jane Austen reading. And who knows, maybe someday it will suppliment my knowledge if I also get to visit Bath and Jane Austen country (fingers crossed, fervently hoping).
