Sequel to Clan of the Cave Bear. The heroine of the series is Ayla who was adopted into the Clan of the Cave Bear when she was young. Never truly fitting in with her adoptive tribe, Ayla finds herself cast out and made to live on her own in the prehistoric world. She now decides to set on a quest to find the "others" who are a tribe of people more like her. As she travels the glacial landscape, she finds a valley that is home to herd of steppe horses. In this new found valley, Ayla finds herself befriending an orphaned foal and a wounded cave lion cub. Her "animal family" still doesn't replace her need to have human contact. Fate steps in and Ayla comes face to face with a stranger who may have the answer to her questions of who she really is.
