This little guy has been collecting dust on my shelf for far too long. We are going to find a new home and a new friend for it.

Here is an editorial review from Library Journal:

The focal point for this immensely complicated plot is Congresswoman Laura Christen. Aiming to be the first female Speaker of the U.S. House of Representatives, she unexpectedly learns that the cosmetics company she founded is about to secretly distribute a mind-control drug. Alternating chapters between Washington (about which Dean, wife of John Dean, has considerable knowledge) and Los Angeles, Dean creates a vast gallery of characters. Her previous novel, Washington Wives (Morrow, 1987), still available at public libraries, gave little hint that Dean's talent includes virtuoso plotting. About halfway through, though, this dazzler falters from the weight of its own cleverness. Though not overly long, the plotting is overdone, leaving little room for the reader to appreciate the more witty and amusing bits. This is by no means Advise and Consent , but many political fiction readers will enjoy this spiritedly vicious amusement despite the convoluted plot.

Journal Entry 4 by LastCavalier from Springfield, Virginia USA on Friday, July 18, 2008
Here are my opinions on the book:

US Congresswoman Laura Christen is attempting to become the first Independent woman Speaker of the American Congress, despite all the opposition thrown at her by the male members of Congress and people of both political parties. A campaign of hate mail filled with slurs, allegations of drug connections and the claim that she abandoned an illegitimate baby, appears in the gutter press and is sent to the parties opposing her election. A very complicated plot unfolds with murder, attempted blackmail and the unleashing of a powerful, mind bending drug by a company with whom she was connected years previously, surfacing. It's an entertaining read, full of the back stabbing nasty bits that we are all too well aware, must go on in the political field.
