This book won the 1997 Orange Prize for Fiction.

It begins with a young Jewish boy hiding from the Nazis being dug out of the mud of the forest by a geologist who smuggles him home to Greece. The story of the boy beginning his life again and the instant trust between him and his rescuer is told from the boy's point-of-view in poetic, flowing language. Athos, the rescuer-geologist is a fine character. However, the story becomes episodic as the boy grows, and part-way through the story jumps in time to a new character and narrator. The action of the story becomes more internal, and the self-conscious language more irritating. I gave up on it.

Left with me by a relative, this was an intensely moving and beautifully written book about survivors of the holocaust, told mainly by a 7 year old boy who grows up with strangers and makes a new life - from Poland to Greece and Canada. I enjoyed it so much I don't want to pass it on yet!
