Cats Creep the Fire to Art is a collection of the works of Australian poet, Matthew Ward. According to Ward, "The poems contained within these walls were painfully & gleefully penned between 1992 & 1996...". Touching upon various subjects, including death, religion, politics and gender, all are well worth reading. It's been a while since I last read modern poetry, and I have missed it. Thus, I was very much in a mood to appreciate the poems in this collection. I can't say that I understood all of the poems in this book (perhaps I'm a bit dense, but I almost never fully understand poetry) but I certainly enjoyed them. In my opinion the top three works in this collection are (in no particular order) Pictures, The Newcastle Show and Performance. For those who enjoy poetry, even if modern poetry is not your usual fare, this is a volume I highly recommend acquiring.
